I'm researching the Dows of Somerset and Hunterdon counties, New Jersey during the 1800s.I transcribed the following will from microfilm.I have reason to believe this individual is related to my family but have thus far been unable to prove a connection.At any rate, I post this here in hopes the the information might assist someone else.
Last Will and Testament of John H. Dow, deceased #3822R Proved October 29, 1861 and recorded in the surrogate office of the County of Somerset in Book H of Wills, pages 304, by John H. Anderson, surrogate.
In the name of God, Amen,
I, John H. Dow, of the Township of Bernards in the County of Somerset and State of New Jersey, being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my testament and last will as follows.
My will is that as soon after my decease as may be convenient that my executor hereinafter named sell at public sale all my real and personal estate and after the payments of all my just debts and funeral expenses, the residue of the proceed of the sale of said property to be divided as follows—
I give and bequeath unto my three sisters vn Keziah Dow, Rachel Dow, and Catharine Dow, all the residue of my property, necessary (?) to be kept at interest in the hand of my executor and the interest to be divided equally among them and if necessary for their comfort and support of all or either of them.I do hereby authorize my executor to take of the principal what may be required for their use during their natural lives and after their decease that is all three of the above named heirs the remainder (if any) to be divided equally among Henry Todd, John H. Crop, and the children of Phebe Ann Schamp (dec.), share and share alike, except the share of John H. Crop.I do order my executor to deduct from his share what he may owe me at the time of my decease and lastly, I do hereby appoint my friend, David G. Schamp, executor of this my testament and last will, and I do hereby authorize and empower my said executor to sell and convey my real estate and to all that may be necessary to be done in the fulfillment of said will, for ?-----? whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the twenty-fourth day of August in the year of our Lord, Eighteen Hundred and fifty-nine.
