Hi, Jack, In your searches for Dow history in the Ontario area, you didn't by chance come across a Lorenzo Dow?In Michigan's 1860 census he was listed as being 38 yrs. old and born in New York. He is married to Catherine Betzer or Prester (my ggrandfather's marriage license from Michigan lists her as Prester, but that's another story) According to the census some of the children were born in Canada and some in Michigan. They were:Canada - Sara A.(1845), Mary Jane(1848), Charles(1852) and Mathilda(1852). Michigan - Alonzo(1856), Emma(1860), Hartwell(1863) Nicholas Sherman(1864)(ggf) and Cora E.(1869).
Nicholas Sherman was married to Mary Eva Ruby, d/o Archibald Ruby and Rosalie Gee (or Guy) in 1888 in Muskegeon, Michigan. Their children were Harvey Lorenzo, Guy, Eva, Giles Elliot (my gf) Carol Wray and Fred Sherman. The 1870 census states both Lorenzo and Catherine were born in New York; however the 1880 census states that he was born in Canada and his father was born in New York, his mother in Holland.Catherine was always New York, her parents too.
Hopefully you can shed some light on this. Any info you might have would be greatly appreciated. Talk about a brick wall, but it's not a bad as my Holbrook line.
