The best source of information about the Dows (also Doe, Dowe) is The Book of Dow, published in 1929 by Robert Piercy Dow of California. It is over 1,000 pages and lists names of over 30,000 persons connected to the family. It traces the family origins to seven early settlers in the Northeast. Using its a-b-c-d numbering system, you can trace your family tree back to the 1600s and sometimes beyond. The book may still be available from Tuttle Antiquarian Books, Rutland VT for $45 and from Higginson Books Co., POBox 778, Salem MA 01970 (softcover, $139). Also look here online for the postings of Florence Gargaro. She has a phenomenal amount of information about the Dow Family history which she always seems generously willing to share. There are other sites online that are devoted partly or exclusively to Dow genealogy. Good luck. You're part of a most interesting family.
