"Contractor Unearths A Bit of History" (story finished on page A6 as "Stone")
Center Harbor NH
Extract of story: A 7 foot 2" tall obelisk of carved granite, weighing approximately 1,200 pounds was dug up today by Moultonboro contractor Bob Hammond while digging a ditch at Chris Tremblay's newly completed office building on Route 25 in Center Harbor. The stone is presently in front of Hammond's business on Route 25near the Moultonborough Airport.
Names carved into the monument: John Dow born August 30, 1775, died June 10, 1852. Mary Dow, born March 29, 1781, died July 28, 1877
Members of the Center Harbor Historical Society determined that Dow and his wife were buried in the Bean Cemetery off the Bean Road in Moultonboro. A marble marker for John and Mary Dow, which also lists their children, was found at the cemetery.
Two photos accompanied the article.
I saved the article, and would be happy to mail it to the first descendant of John and Mary Dow who ends me an email.
