Thomas DOWDELL lived on the St. Lawrence near Ogdensburg, NY, in 1860.Thomas & brother Edward were believed to be sons of James, who left Dundalk, Ireland, with his family about 1840.Upon arrival in Brockville, Canada, the father placed his family in a boarding house and went to look for work. When he did not return, his wife sought help, and his naked murdered body was found. Then the family came down with diphtheria, and only two or perhaps three of the children survived. As the two little boys were playing near the river, a Mr. KEARNEY asked whose children they were and was told, "They're yours if you want them."Hearing the rest of their story, he took them in.Later two of his daughters married the two boys.Edward became a teacher at Potsdam, NY.Thomas DOWDELL & wife Katherine (KEARNEY) lived near Ogdensburg, NY, but after he had served in the Union army, they moved to Dubuque, then to Iowa Falls, IA, where Thomas DOWDELL was soon buried, succumbing to a malady contracted during the war. Katherine died in Chicago.

For the Irish history, Ethel recommended the book:Dowdall Deeds. There were DOWDALLS in Cos. Meath & Louth. The name comes from DeDouvedal, Norman French, via DOWUEDALE & DOVEDALE.William DOWDALL was sent by King Henry II to Dundalk, Co. Louth, and all the DOWDALL families probably descend from the DOWDALL family of Dundalk.During the reign of Henry VIII, about 1543, James DOWDALL married the daughter of Christopher DOWDALL.
