Hope someone on this forum may have answers regarding my Dowells. My line is as follows: My parents - William Morton Dowell (1874-1951)& Frankie Timmons; my grandparents - Alonzo Henry Dowell (1847-1929) & Rosamond DeMoss; my g grandparents - George Martin Dowell (1822-1888) & Elizabeth Catherine Knight; my gg grandparents George Dowell (1789-?)& Polly Tomberlin (1798-?). It has been most difficult finding info on George Dowell and Polly Tomberlin other than birth records that were kept by the Reuben Hickman Dowell (1826-1897) & Emily Jane Harris Dowell family. These records also indicated that Polly Tomberlin was part Cherokee Indian. Reuben Hickman Dowell was a brother of my g grandfather George Martin Dowell.
My George Martin Dowell is said to have been born in Alabama (1822) and I know he was living in the Muscatine Co., Iowa area in the 1840s & 1850s. The family later located to the Lowell, Cherokee Co., KS area and George and sons were engaged in the pottery making busines. During the 1890s my grandfather (Alonzo Henry Dowell) and my father (William Morton Dowell) removed to Stroud, Lincoln Co., OK.
According to the "History of Scott County, Iowa - 1882" it mentions that a Pricilla America Dowell was married in 1854 there to a William Lee. Pricilla America was a sister to my George Martin Dowell. The history states further that Pricilla America Dowell was a native of McDonough Co., IL and that her father was George Dowell of TN and her mother was Mary Vincent of VA. It is not clear if this means the elder George Dowell had two wives (Polly Tomberlin & Mary Vincent) or if they are one and the same person. There is a George Dowell family listed on the 1830 McDonough Co., IL census andthe ages for the oldest male and female appear to fit for my George and Polly/Mary. Assuming this is my George Dowell what happen to him after 1830? Does anyone have any further info on my gg grandfather, George Dowell and his family?
