How does he come by the first name of NEWITT?Is there a mother's maiden name or a previous family name of NEWITT?I am researching William George NEWITT, who entered US via New Orleans, LA about 1850, from Chatteris, Cambridge, ENG.His son Abraham, the baby, was my ggf.Son George William was the Constable/Police Chief of Evansville, IN and also a florist, like his father and brother. Most of the Newitt line, however, was in Pennsylvania. One of the sons of George W. was also named George W. NEWITT and was Teddy Roosevelt's youngest Rough Rider under Officer Maximillian LUNA in the Spanish-American War. He then married a daughter of Abraham's - his cousin, who he met at the St. Louis World's Fair, named the Louisiana Purchase Fair.
George W., the father, Abraham, and William George did the floral work and landscaping design for the Chicago World's Fair, called the Columbian Exposition Fair. They had floral sheds in Chicago, and were the original nucleus of what is now known as the Chicago Floral Company. There was another brother, Thomas, also of Chicago, and several sisters.
