Dan: I have indeed gotten some new leads on the origin of DUBIEL. A Polish fellow, in fact, now living in Canada has provided some interesting information that seems to be on track. He has backed this up with LDS (Mormon) records.
I hope to post this on my site Dubiel-Ancestry.com in the near future.
The quick version is that Dubiels lived in Switzerland in the latter 1600's in the canton Vaud.(There are LDS records to back this up.) They emigrated because certain towns in Poland were prospering and needed business people to help run shops, etc. Early Dubiels were inn keepers (this part is heresay). The fact that towns south and east of Krakow did in fact import workers is historical fact.
There are some other details that agree with some information regarding my own family history. This is very interesting. I , personally, cannot dismiss the fact that the Swiss town of Biel is not that far from the Vaud canton. My Canadian -Polish contact maintains, from his reserach, that we were originally French. This I do not know. I only like to project as far as records go. The marriage records in Switzerland (town of Fiez, canton Vaud) are too interesting. My own Church records go back to 1721 and then end. Stay tuned. Thanks for the interest.
