LOUISVILLE TIMES OBITUARY – 09/07/1893
Achille Dubourg, the wealthy old gardener who resides at 650 Shipp Avenue, is at the point of death and can survive but a short while longer. His life has been a remarkable one and is an evidence of the virtues of perseverance and economy. Mr. Dubourg is reputed to be worth nearly a million dollars, although he does not list that amount in Jefferson County. He is seventy-three years of age and his fortune is the result of hard licks. Fifty years ago when he was a young man and owned a grocery in the lower portion of the city, he was then poor. Some years later, however, he purchased a few acres of land where he now is with funds he had saved during his mercantile life and at once began gardening. He has since followed the occupation and by that means has amassed the fortune, which he is at present worth. The old gentleman is well known to a great many people in the city, especially to the earlier residents. He is honest and a Christian. He is noted for his equate dealings and doesn’t owe a cent. He was always among the first to pay taxes at both the City Hall and courthouse. His county property is listed at $53,600, while he pays city taxes on $19,742 worth of property. Besides this, he has large sums loaned out, secured by real estate mortgages and notes. Mr. Dubourg has three children living, a daughter and two sons, Henry and Frank Dubourg, both of whom are gardeners and well off in this world’s goods. The old gentleman has been in feeble health for some time, but for the past few days has grown rapidly worse, and now his death is looked for at any time. He is surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren, who are doing all possible to make his last hours on earth comfortable.

COURIER JOURNAL OBITUARY – 09/08/1893
Mr. Achille Dubourg, an old and respectable citizen died yesterday at his home on Shipp Avenue near Second Street of old age. While he had been infirm for some years past, his condition was at no time considered serious until a day or two before the end came. He was able to be downtown less than ten days ago. He was in his 78th year. No arrangements have been made for the funeral. The career of Mr. Dubourg is an illustration of what thrift and honesty can be to a man. Born of a noble family in the South of France, he came to the United States at an early age. After a few years spent in New Orleans, in 1834, he came to Louisville as a young man and soon afterwards started the grocery at 12th and Walnut Street. In this he was successful and he possessed good business tact and a frugal disposition. He soon amassed enough money to purchase a farm in what was then the county, but now adjoining the City Limits. Here Mr. Dubourg started gardening on a large scale and each year furnished large quantities of vegetables to the markets of Louisville. By the time the effects of advancing age began to show itself, Mr. Dubourg found himself the possessor of a considerable fortune, while his property by the growth of the city had become very valuable. The last few years Mr. Dubourg spent at the home he had occupied for so many years enjoying with his family the fruits of his faithful labor. He was well liked and his honest business dealings had caused him to command the respect of all. Those who had known him for years spoke yesterday of him as an upright, honest and benevolent Christian man. He was a devout Catholic. Mr. Dubourg was twice married. His second wife survives him, together with six children. These are: Mrs. John Lewis, Sr. Euphrasia of the Dominican Sisterhood, Frank, Henry, Malgoire and Aventine Dubourg.
