Duddlestons from NJ - Pre 1800's
Hi there,
My name is Maryann Hazen-Stearns and I'm the granddaughter of Elsie Mae Duddleston Winters. She was born and raised in Paterson, NJ and then moved to Midland Park, NJ when she was 14.
I've been writing her memoirs (she's three years short of being a centenarian) and have quite a bit of information to share with you, if you'd like. Here's a quick family tree:
My grandmother:
Elsie Mae (Holland) Duddleston Winters
Elsie's parents:
William Walter Duddleston: 12/22/1872 ~ 1/12/1943
MaryAnna Holland Duddleston: 8/28/1875 ~ 12/7/1941
William Walter Duddleston's parents:
William Duddleston: 7/14/1845 ~ 5/17/1911
Eliza Neal (sp?) Duddleston: ?/?/1847 ~ 1/13/1897 from England
*According to the 1870 census William Duddleston was a silk weaver
Note: William Walter Duddleston & Eliza's other children were:
Robert Duddleston: 4/?/1867 ~ ?
Frederick Duddleston: 11/?/1870 ~ ?
WWD…
Albert Duddleston: 1/?/1875 ~ ?
Elijah Duddleston: ?
*According to the 1880 census, William Duddleston & Robert worked in the silk mill, Robert was only 14 years old at the time.
*According to the 1900 census, Robert (who married Dora and had two sons named Robert & Frederick) was a ribbon weaver in the silk mill. He was 33 at the time.
*According to the 1900 census, Frederick (who married Anna and had three daughters names Orena, Gladys and Esther) was a silk weaver. He was 29 at the time.
*Although the census taker of one of these sheets of census information made obvious errors…it appears that William Duddleston (Sr) had another wife names Janis (?). At that time (1900 census) Albert was 25 and he was a silk weaver and William was 53. It seems to say that Janis was from England, as well as her parents.
I also have many tintypes and bits of memorabilia, which include silk ribbons made in Paterson with the dates of 1892 & 1893. I have photos of the flood and fire of Paterson from 1902…
I hope this information is helpful to you and, also hopefully, you may have some information I've been searching for. The farthest back I've been able to go so far is:
Robert & Sarah Tilly Duddleston
Arthur & Emma Hewitt
Archibald & Anna Holland (b: 1700's)
Nicholas & Margaret Snyder
Let me know if we can share info.
Good Cheer & Be Well,
Mary
