Hello Everyone, Being a DUFORD researching for several years now. I would love to give you some helpful hints in your research and alittle history. DeFord usually goes back to Quebec as Duford or more commonly DUFORT. Now, depending on where in USA that your ancestors settled will determine what DOFORT line you come from. There are two DUFORT lines in Quebec. One is DUFORT dit LACOUTURE. Dit is a word meaning that the family has another surname they also use. Some having taken on the surname LACOUTURE instead of DUFORT. In this case, they didn't, but it was optional. The LACOUTURE DUFORD family took on the DEFORD spelling at times, and did settle quite often in the Bay City Michigan area as well as many other areas in the lower part of Michigan. They came from the area in Quebec known as Vaudreuil County and Soulanges county (two counties adjoining Ontario, but still part of Quebec).
I come from the other line of DUFORT, which is the BOUGRET dit DUFORT line. They were divided. Some took BOUGRET and some took DUFORT, which later in USA became DUFORD also. These settled many places all over USA. They came from the Quebec counties of L'Assomption, and other areas such as Boucherville, Vercheres, Pte Aux Trembles, & Chambly...among other areas also. Mine settled in the area of L'Assomption county known as Repentigny, St.Roch L'Achigan, St.Lin, Mascouche, Assomption, St.Paul L'Ermite, and others.
