I am researching possible family ancestry emanating from Moray, apparently starting from a recorded "Nicholas Sutherland of Forbat, first Baron of Torboll (1363)".Family trees of the Earls of Sutherland show that the first Earls of Duffus descend from this Nicholas Sutherland.
I would like to hear from anybody who knows anything about the Duffus/Sutherland line going so far back. You will observe, that my last name is the same as the place, which is the apparent origin of Nicholas Sutherland of Forbat, first Baron of Torboll.
My daughter lives very close to Duffus in Elgin (at Lossiemouth) and we will be visiting her next week for 10 days, during which time we hope to visit Torboll, where the place called Forbat existed in 1363. It seems that one of the Sutherlands or Duffus families adopted the name Forbat - and migrated to the European Continent (as many did in those days) - where I originated, with a name that now looks like being from Scotland. Torboll is now no more than a hamlet of a few crofts, with a very small population. Genealogists in Scotland tell us that Forbat definitely was a place, probably a property, croft, birchwood or similar. All very intriguing.
