According to a family genealogist in Ireland, the DUIGNANS(ODUIBHGEANNAIN) were one of the most important literary families in Ireland. They were bards and ollavs to the leading septs(clans) of the areas now comprised in Leitrim,Roscommon and Longford: the MacDermots, the MacRannells(Reynolds) and the O'Farrells. Their principal residence was at Kilronan,Roscommon. In addition to the fame of Peregrine O'DUIGENAN(d.1664) there was Magnus O'DUIGENAN who was the chief compiler of the"Book of Ballymote"(c.1415)and O'DUIGNANS were responsible for several other noteworthy literary works. In my own searching I find that wherever there is a grouping of the above mentioned families, one will usually find some DUIGNANS. The variants of the name include;Duigenan,Dignam,Digunam,Duigan,&Dygnam.
