William, I am very excited to connect with you, re our Dunford genealogy.Since you have been researching this family for 20-25 years I am sure that you have much more information than I have.I started thisresearch about 4 years ago, at the time I did not even know my great grandfather James Thomas Dunford's name.Like so many I waited until everyone who could give me answere was gone. I am really not sure that John Dunford b:1800 in NC is his father but, I have suspected for some time that he is, I do know that there is some family connection, because in Dec. of 1870 when he married my great-grandmother Donna (Donnie) Atkinson, he was living in Grimes County, Texas where he got his marriage license and then they traveled to Montague County, Texas where they were married in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Two of John Dunford's sons John T. Dunford b:1839 in AL and Phillip Parker b:1842 in MS. were living in Montague County at the time.
I found that the 1850 Censue of Perry County, AR listed John Dunford B:1800, his wife Sarah ? b: NC and six children as follows: F- Absola b: abt 1837AL M- John T. b: abt 1839 in AL M- James R. b: 1840 in MS ( I believe that it is possible that this is my g-grandfather the middle initial and year of birth are incorrect, as happens some time) M- Phillip P. b: 1842 in MS M- William M. b: 1844 in MS
James Thomas Dunford served in the Civil War from 1861-1865 and was a member of Company A 18th Texas Calvary (Dismounted). He was attached to "Johnson's Brigade" made up of the 14th,15th,16th,17th and 18th Calvary who fought from Arkansas Post to Durham's Station on to Tennessee and MS.James Thomas died 24 Jan, 1906 and is buried in Watts Chapel Cemetery in Johnson County, Texas near Cleburne. There is a Civil War Memorial on his grave, the tombstone reads "James Dunford CSA, Company A, 18th Calvary".I was there for the first time in April of this year and saw the grave for myself. His widow Donnie filed a widow's application for pension on March 11, 1810 in Hill County, TX.
James Thomas Dunford and his wife Donnie Atkinson had five children who lived to adulthood: F- Carrie Lizzieb: 1882 TX M- James Lawrence b: 1874 TX (my connection) M- Eddie Eugeneb: 1878 TX M- Thomas Everett b: 1889 TX M- Wardb: 1896 TX
I appreciate your contact, I would truly be grateful for any information that you have.I realzie that this is quiet a lengthy posting, but I wanted to give you enough information so that you might determine if our families are connected.
