I am trying to find out what happened to Washington George Dunan after he was discharged from the Iowa National Guard on 11-27-1862 due to disability. He was discharged in Helena, AR. He joined the Iowa National Guard in 07-04-1861 in Des Moins, Iowa. What I now of Washington George Dunan is as follows:
George Washington Dunan b:1831 d:? (wife Susan Lawes Barrington). G. W. Dunan had 10 siblings and his father was a Joseph Dunan b: 1796 d:1847 (wife Sarah Scott). Recently I discovered a Dungan genealogy site that suggested that Joseph Dunan had changed his name from Dungan and that his father was a William Dungan b:1756 (wife Alice Morris). which I can follow back through the extensively researched Dungan surname. I could not find where Geroge Washington Dunan went from St. Marys Ohio when he, as the local history put it, "absconded from his wife". He left her, never to return, to raise two children. I was able to find him in the Iowa National Guard at the start of the Civil War and found through his enlistment papers that he was discharged in 1862 in Arizona but I have lost his trail there. Still trying to find out what happened to him. Anyway, I think that the thought of his father Joseph changing the name to Dunan from Dungan may be true because both families have the same background from Pennsylvania and Ohio. Also the Dungans show up in Iowa also and that may be why George Washington Dunan went to Iowa to see or stay with his family. While checking the 1880 census I found a George Washington Dungan who lived in Fontanelle, Adair, Iowa with a est birth of 1840 and birthplace of Pennsylvania. His wife was a Lucy M. They had two children. This fits the Washington George Dunan/Dungan's background. Does anyone have any information on Washington George Dunan/Dungan?
Thanks in advance for any leads that you may have.
