Durfee was born 22 Jul 1855, son of David P. and Margaret (Rector) Durfee, b. 1811 & 1817 Schenectady County, NY, respectively.David P. was a farmer who died 1889, Schenectady County, NY.Margaret died there in 1878.The had the following children: Francis M., d. Philipsburg, MT, age 62; James E., d. 1914 near San Diego, CA; Louisa (Mrs. Louis Ruff), Schenectady County, NY; Oscar F., Schoharie County, NY; Adalaide (Mrs. Thomas Botscheider), Philipsburg, MT; David M.; Leonard A. & Francis, Philipsburg, MT.
David M. Durfee was educated in Schenectady County & Schoharie Academy, NY. He taught school in NY for two years then entered the law offices of N.P. Hinman, Albany, NY, for one year.Returned to teaching in Somerset County, MD, for three years and studied law at the same time.Was admitted to the bar at Annapolis, MD, 1882, and moved west to Philipsburg, MT. While establishing a law practice, he worked in the lumber woods for six months and taught school for three years. In 1886, he was elected Deer Lodge county attorney for two years; in 1889 selected as delegate to the constitutional convention, and elected judge of Deer Lodge County. Became prosecuting attorney for 12 years.
On 1 Feb 1888, David M. married Miss Emelie J. Irving of Baltimore, MD, daughter of Thomas and Emelie (Delmas) Irving.In 1902, Mrs. Durfee was accidentally shot in Missoula, MT.Their children were: Eulalie (Mrs. Buford Collings), Kansas City, MO; Thomas Irving, Duluth, MN; Adelaide (Mrs. Ellery C. Proctor), Proctor, MT; Marie J., Missoula, MT.
In 1903, Missoula, MT, David M. Durfee married Miss Elizabeth E. Kelley, daughter of Patrick Kelley of San Francisco, CA. David and Elizabeth had one daughter, Eileen, born 31 Oct 1912.
David M. Durfee died 19 April 1942, Spokane, WA.
