According to O'Lunin, historian for the Maguires of Co. Fermanagh, The frst Dhuirnin was the grandson of Roderick O'Connor, the last king of Ireland. This Dhuirnin was born about 1225. Tribal warfare and the English caused the family to migratenorth to the protection of the O'Donnell's. There they became scribes and cavelry soldiers. Various family members are mentioned four times in the "Annals of Ireland" by the Four Masters. In the 16-1700's some members added the English "G". One of the Fitz- Geralds and one of the Duirnins went to England in the late 15-1600's. This may have been the origin of the English & Scottish Durnings.
