John was born 19 Feb 1848, to John and Sarah (Hurst) Durston. The father, John, was born in Bristol, England and came to this country as a young man. He was a shipwright and built boats for the Erie Canal. He died 1863 in Syracuse, NY. Sarah was born in Dublin, Ireland, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Morris) Hurst. She died in Syracuse, NY, in 1901.
John H. Durston, attended Yale University until 1869; he continued his studies at Heidleburg University in Germany & received a Doctor of Philosophy in 1870. Returned to Syracuse and was on the faculty of Syracuse University until 1880. In 1880, he became the editor of the Syracuse Standard. In 1887, he located to Montana & in 1889 established the Anaconda Standard and was editor of that paper until 1912. In 1913, he established the Butte Daily Post.
In 1871, Syracuse, NY, John married Miss Mary Harwood, daughter of George W. & Martha (Watson) Harwood of Syracuse. Durston children: Martha H.D. (Mrs. F.W. Peckover), Anaconda; Laura (Mrs. John Maxey), Bozeman.
