Hi Alan! Strange places we meet?! Did I already tell you about Sir John Duthie owning and restoring Cairnbulg Castle in the late C19? Previously called Philorth ("Lover of the Straight and Upright"), it was given in 1375 to the Earl of Ross's daughter as part of her dowry, when she married Sir Alexander Fraser. Later the name was changed to Cairnbulg (a "Heap of Stones", I guess) and was the Fraser family home. John Duthie bougth it in the late C19th,and is described as "a shipbuilder from Aberdeen".He sold it to Lord Saltoun in 1934. Information about the castle is in the book Ancestral Castles of Scotland by Hugh Cantlie, published by Collins & Brown Ltd,1992, ISBN 1 85585 1180. Doesn't say anything else about the Duthies, but someone might be able to get some more leads from that. He sounds typical of our branch of the family anyway, "fixing things up"!
