Linda,Thanks so much for your reply.Okay, what I know about my grandfather's family is next to nothing. He went by the name "Henry Benjamin Roberts", however at this point I'm not so sure that "Roberts" was his birth name. Here's why:
He is found in the 1910 Bell Co, Texas census with George and Mattie Roberts (second marriage for Mattie) and listed as "stepson".Conclusion being he was son of Mattie from previous marriage.(this census was taken on May 3, 1910).
The family listed immediately above them is a George J. Dyess and his wife and daughter Julia and Lorene.
Now on the 1910 census for McLennan Co, Texas (taken three weeks earlier- April 15, 1910)these two families can be found living together.
Henry is listed as grandson of George Dyess BUT his name is given as HENRY WHITE.My conclusion is that Mattie Roberts was born Mattie DYESS, married someone with the last name WHITE and then second husband was George ROBERTS.My grandfather probably wasn't aware of his birth father being anyone other than George Roberts (George and Mattie married when Henry was three or four years old.He (my grandfather) never knew his actual birth date and couldn't even read or write until he was an adult. He left home and lied about his age to joined the Army when he was very, very young. He lost all contact withhis family after that.
So, as you can see, it's all a big mystery that hopefully I'll be able to sort out some day. Thanks for your interest and any suggestions you might be able to offer.Take care.Lyn
