All the "fuss and muss" about controlling YDNA "testee results."
FTDNA (the company also hosts YSEARCH.com which is like a dna/ydna clearinghouse), you CAN test anonymously and are not forced to join any "surname project," administered many times by those who have absolutely no possibility of a YDNA match themselves.
Please know that any male/female can contact FTDNA.com without the "assistance" or direction and have their DNA or YDNA (male lines) tested.
You actually have the CHOICE to test without interference of any genealogy busybodies, who are bored with their present research and have nothing better to do.
The DNA/YDNA tests are improving continually.I suggest that any male testee interested in finding relevant matches, take the best YDNA test offered to begin with. The lower cost tests do not test enough markers, and therefore you will match with hundreds of others, but no real genealogical connections can be made if the common ancestor is say 20 or more generations past.
I suggest (just a suggestion...) testing YDNA using the 67 marker test which is presently the best for researching male lineage.
As far as anyone stating that they will keep your results anonymous IF you have a good reason...HOGWASH!How manipulative is that?!Having a genealogist who wants you to test, hand over your results, and IF they believe you have good reason, then they will make your results anonymous. What on earth!?
As far as "discounts" you might receive from FTDNA IF you join a surname project.FTDNA constantly has specials on their testing. If it's worth saving a few bucks to have some administrator TELL you what to do, then go right ahead.
Thanks very much, and good luck to those searching.
