I forgot, the above is from Public Ledger, June 30, 1838.
We know that in 1830 Rufus lived in Bedford County, PA, which is about 142 miles, not close, but not far either. If the above is Rufus (b. 1793) then we can assume that very shortly after the arrest and getting out on bail, he headed to Gallia County where his first wife died in late '38 or early '39. He married his second wife, Nancy Sullivan in Washington County, Sept. 12, 1839.
So far, I've found out nothing more about Rufus or the men who were arrested with him, but it certainly sounds like they weren't innocent of the charges. I'm trying to track down court records or more news articles about the incident and/or court.
