Alex,
Noted your 2004 post regarding Jacob David Eash.I am a 7th generation descendent of Bishop Jacob Eash, born in 1774 in Dauphin County, and educated in Dauphin (surrounding Harrisburg) and Berks (surrounding Reading) Counties in Pennsylvania. He was the first ordained Amish Bishop in Somerset County PA.He was the son of Jacob Eash, Sr., who arrived on the ship Duke of Witenburg, from Rotterdam on October 16, 1751.No middle name is given.
The Amish of the time did not maintain as great a distinction from Mennonites as is true today, and Bishop Eash’s community all became Mennonite when the distinction became important.
My information comes from Eash Family Record and History, published in the 1930s and authored by Jonathon T Eash and Levi T Eash.I am a seventh generation of the Bishop. My mother who was not married when the book was published was Dorothy GertrudeGochnour, listed at number 813 as part of her mother’s listing. (Unmarried people did not have separate listings in the book).
Jacob Eash, Sr is known to have had four sons, according to the same source, Joseph, Peter, Christophel [sic}, and Jacob.Very little was known when the book was published about the other brothers, perhaps that is still true.
I’m wondering whether or not your “Jacob David Eash” and my Bishop Jacob Eash are the same person. If so, what is your source on the “David” part of the name and what else do you know about him?I wonder whether or not any of your ancestors are in the “Eash Book” as we call it. I would like to check.
I will be happy to compare notes if you are still interested in genealogy.
Tom
