I have been tracing the Essam name for 10+ years now and have a huge family tree into which I have connected numerous people. I would love to be able to connect other variations of the name but although I have found many, most do not connect yet and if they do they are a misspelt Essam (all other family members have the name Essam). Are there any of you who have found definite Northamptonshire connections. If so I would like to hear from you.As I only live 10 minutes from the Northamptonshire Record Office and am a record agent for them I would be happy to continue to trace your tree in the hope that it will connect with the one that I have.
Also I have read your comments re. the origin of the name. It's fun to guess at it but there are so many areas to look it would be impossible to say for definite.I too had an idea of Scotland at one point especially as a very similar name is up there and I guessed that it may have come from France before that.Ihave since heard a theory that we came from the Essenes a sect mentioned in the dead sea scrolls! The name Essam is used as a christian name in some countries and as a surname in Egypt!! So who knows.I for one am going to continue to search the parish registers as far back as they go 1500s and maybe from there look at other documents to discover where it came from.It would be good to prove a theory.
