Recently an Ostertag cousin visited the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC, and he discovered a memorial for Sergeant Vernon Lee Ostertag who died in South Vietnam in 1967.His name is listed on Wall P-26E/L-11.
I have done some web research, and I find that he was born 22-APR-1946, and the Memorial Wall shows a death year of 1967.Information at Ancestry.com shows that he was killed in action in South Vietnam, but gives a death date of 21-MAY-1995, age 49, and that his body was recovered.
Social Security records confirm his birth date as 22-APR-1946 and death date of 21-MAY-1995, with his last residence as being Dupo, Saint Clair County, Illinois.
I am totally confused by this one!If he actually died in 1967, he would have only been 21 years of age.As the record shows that his body WAS recovered, was it NOT recovered until 21-MAY-1995?
If anyone knows anything more about Sergeant Vernon Lee Ostertag, I would really appreciate hearing from you so that I can get the "facts" straight as I want to honor him in an upcoming Ostertag-Easterday Association of America newsletter.Hopefully, he has some family members out there that this message will reach.
In the meanwhile, thank you Vernon Lee Ostertag for your service to your Country.
