I'm trying to find a man who was born Hans Ostensen (Østensen), on October 16, 1850 in Norway. He, along with his parents, emigrated to the U.S. in 1852 (his younger brotherwas born during the voyage). The family settled in Houston County, Minnesota, and Hans' father (Osten Hansen) died three years later. His mother remarried to Christoff Hansen, and the family moved to Rice County, Minnesota. In the 1860 census, the four of them are all enumerated in Rice County:
Christ Hansen Christie Hansen Hans Estersen, age 9 (the guy I'm looking for) Ole Estersen, age 7 (my ancestor)
The sons' names should have been Ostensen (sons of Osten Hansen) but the census-taker probably didn't know how to write Norwegian names in English, and just wrote what he heard.
After this, Hans disappears completely - but he would have been 19 or 20 in the 1870 census, and he may have moved out on his own. There is no death record for him in Rice County.Ole continues to show up in census records, but by 1870 he has shortened his last name to EASTON.I'm wondering if Hans did the same.
Any ideas?Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
