Jacob Eckes Born: Krenmaik Germany FS Occupation: Journeyman Baker Age 23: in 1901
Born: c. 1878
I found the above information on the 1901 UK census. He was my partners Great Grandfather.Jacobs youngest daughter Gertrude is still alive (93yrs)but has no recollection of him as he left England for America (Philadephia)in 1912 leaving his wife & 3 children behind when Gertrude was just 3 yrs old (Jacob would have been about 34).Gertrude has given me letters that were sent to her mother from her father. Sadly Louise (his wife) never made the trip to the US. In one of the these letters he makes reference to the fact that he will be changing his name to Mr Green (1914).The letters make very sad reading and displays the poverty both here and in the US at that time.Louise ended up in a workhouse for the poor in the East End of London with her 3 children. In the 20's his eldest daughter Nellie made attempts to find her fatherby contacting the Consulate in Philadephia but this search came to nothing - probably due to the fact that he had changed his surname.
I would be very grateful if you could let me have any information or leads that I could follow.
