Viola keen compiled "The Five Ede Brothers" before the Internet, using family Bibles, letters, microfilm and hard work. It is 99% accurate. I'm posting a correction or two as I find them.
Miss Keen has Ruby Nobs as the daughter of Alfred Nobs and Bertha Ede.
In 1930 the family is in Cougar Precinct, Kootenai, Idaho:
Albert Nobs, 40, head, Switz, Switz, Switz, farmer diversified
Bertha Nobs, 31, wife, Calif, Calif, Maine
Ruby Smith, 14, step-dau, Ore, Iowa, Calif
Ruth Nobs, 8, dau, Ore, Switz, Calif
John Smninter, 56, boarder, Greece
Christ Pochior, 48, boarder, Greece
Albert was 29 at first marriage, Bertha 21. I suspect they made the mistake that about half the people who have multiple marriages made on the 1930; they answered age at current marriage, not first marriage.
Here is Bertha's first marriage, from Oregon marriages:
Bertha C Ede, Lake Co. 22 0 1914(O = Oct)
John K Smith, Lake Co.22 0 1914
Ruby's obituary appeared in the Coeur d'Alene Press, Jul 02, 2009:
Ruby Jane Culver, 93, passed away May 13, 2009. She was born to Bertha (Ede) Nobs and John Smith in The Dalles, Ore. on May 24, 1915.
Her father passed away when she was three years old. Her mother married Albert Nobs, they homesteaded in Cougar Gulch (Coeur d'Alene) where Ruby and her little sister (Ruth) grew up. They went to school in Cougar Gulch at Meadow Brook School. Ruby had lots of stories to tell of hiking the hills of Cougar Gulch with family and friends, picnics in the Coeur d'Alene park by the lake, and dancing in the Meadowbrook Hall.
She married Ed Pettis and they had three daughters, Janice Pattis, Point Reis [Reyes] Station, Calif.; Marlene (& George) Metter, Fremont, Ohio, Catherine (& Lawrence) Burt, Coeur d'Alene; nine grandchildren, Ed, Jule, Nyla, Pamela, Tamera, Georgia, Jerry, Helen and BJ, and many great-grandchildren.
Ruby married Jared Evan O'Fallon and raised the girls. Evan was killed in a construction accident. She learned to drive when she was 45 and went to school to become an LPN when she was 49 years old. Later she married William Culver and they lived in Brookings, Oregon. They traveled all over the United States for many years visiting family and friends.
Services will be held in Brookings, Oregon at a later date. English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene, is in care of the arrangements.
