There is disagreement among some researchers as to which William Edens was the son of John Adams and Frances "Fanny" Monk Edens. One case in point is Find a Grave posting for William Morgan Edens in Ruddick Cemetery, Benton Co., AR. Two disagreements or rebuttals to the information are posted on that site, and several more are known but not posted. Below is documented evidence for these two William Edens.
John Adams and "Fanny" Monk Edens had son William b. Ca 1844-5 in 1850 and 1860 Hancock Co. TN census. Some researchers believe this is the William with wife Elisa/Eliza found in 1870 Benton Co., AR census, moved to Barry Co., MO by 1880 and later found in OK, where they both died and are buried. William and Elisa/Eliza had children: John H., William Wiley, Henry Harrison, Thomas, Freddie, Matthew, Charles and Edgar/Edward Edens. This William's Death Certificate states he was born in Tennessee, Father was John Edens and Mother was Fanny Monk.
Information on his Death Certificate was furnished by his son John Edens.
Other researchers believe William Morgan Edens, who had wife Vina and lived in Benton Co,. AR, was son of John and Fanny. The information on Death Certificate for William Morgan Edens states that he was born 1844 in Virginia, that he was the widowed husband of Vina Edens, and that his father was Jim Edens. Information on his Death Certificate was furnished by his son Billie Edens. (This Jim Edens is probably James, and his Edens family is not yet known.)
Vina Edens was enumerated in household of her parents John and "Fanny" Monk Edens in 1850 Hancock Co., TN census. She first married Elen Bloomer Herd/Hurd. Their marriage is recorded in the Family Bible of his parents George G. and Phoebe Bloomer Herd. Vina and Elen had children: George Washington, Mary and Jefferson Davis Herd. Elen died of pneumonia while a POW in the Civil War. Vina Edens Herd married second William Morgan Edens 15 Nov 1855 Hawkins Co., TN. They moved from Tennessee to Arkansas and lived near (her parents) John and Fanny Edens. William Morgan and Vina Edens were parents of A. P., William Wiley, Andrew J., Catherine and
Both William Edens are the right age to be son of John and Fanny. However, the Death Certificates for both (William's) clearly shows name of their father. Also, note difference in place of birth - William Morgan Edens was born in Virginia, and the son of John and Fanny was born in Tennessee. Their
place of birth is carried down in their records. Some people refuse to accept information on these Death Certificates as correct. What evidence or documentation does anyone have to contradict?
I sincerely welcome input from anyone with any further evidence than shown above in attempt to resolve or eliminate this confusion/belief/dispute, so that records for all our Edens descendants will be as accurate as possible. This should be the goal of every researcher or anyone else who compiles a Family History or Family Tree. Living next door or buried in the same cemetery is not actual proof of relationship.
Also, some believe that Vina Edens, wife of William Morgan Edens, was born a Ford or was married to a Ford before her first marriage to Elen B. Herd. No documented evidence has yet been offered to support this. Can anyone furnish evidence or documentation? Herd descendants and long time researchers disagree that she was a Ford or was married to one.
Also, where are people getting the name Nancy Elizabeth for the wife of William Edens both buried in Afton, OK?She is always called Eliza.
Like most pioneer families, the Edens named a good many sons William. Tennessee and Arkansas are not known for the number and quality of their early genealogical records. AND all those burned courthouses in Tennessee! All those marriage records that are lost would be so useful. Yet, with what we have to work with, we need to correct some of the Edens family fallacies that are circulating on the Internet.
