One of my gt-gt-aunts, Mathilda "Tillie" Jenks married Frederick T. J. Edgson at the Register Office, Prestwich, Lancs. on 2 Oct 1897. He listed his father as Frederick Edgson, master grocer. I believe that the 'master grocer' is the same person as the one mentioned in your posting.
Based on the 1901 returns and the age shown at marriage, the Frederick who was the son of the master grocer was born around 1870. The 1901 returns show him as being born in London. A check of the 1881 census CDs disclosed the family of a Frederick Edpon, a 33-year old widowed beer retailer living at 214 Jubilee St, Mile End Old Town, London. His place of birth is listed as Parson Drove, Cambridge. The surname of one of his children is listed as "Edpon or Edgson". Not only is there a 10-year old son Frederick, born St. Pancras (close enough to London) included in the returns, but the housekeeper is an unmarried 24-year old born in Barking called Selina E. Hull.
A check of the 1901 returns disclosed the family of a Frederick Edgson, 51 years old, married, a grocer shopkeeper, born in Parson Dora, Cambridge, living with his family at 72 Busk St., Chadderton, Lancs. His wife is Selina E. (45), the eldest daughter shown is a Kate I. (23) born in London [note there was a 3-year old Kate I. in the 1881 returns shown as born in Bow, son George L. (29?, probably the 5 month old son "Kate I." shown in the 1881 returns), son Alfred J. (17), daughter Emma J. (15), daughter Nelly E. (13), son Ernest (11), son Frank (6), and daughter Ida E. (7 mos).
If you have any additional information on the Frederick Edgson born in Parson Drove, I would be delighted to get it.
