Jeannie, I'm not sure about a sister for Laura, but there could be.Her father is a bit of a mystery; he seems to have traveled back and forth between Williamson co. TN and Henderson Co., NC.I picked the information about Laura out of a letter that was written during Civil War times by one of her cousins. They are descendants of Rev. Samuel Edney of Old Buncombe (Henderson Co., NC.The writer of the letter was Mary Sawyer born abt. 1840 per the 1850 Census and died in 1902 in Morganton, NC.She was the daughter of Mary Kelly Edney (probably named after her Grandmother Edney) and Isaac B. Sawyer.Mary Kelly Edney was the daughter of Rev. Samuel Edney and Eleanor Mills. The letter is addressed to " Cousin Susan" who was Susan Scofield Edney born 1843 and the daughter of James Madison Edney (son of Rev. Samuel Edney) and Laura Marie Turner who lived in New York at the time of the letter which was June 19, 1865.Mary Sawyer tells cousin Susan about many members of the family.Laura's father was Winson/Winston and Mary wrote, "Uncle Winston I presume is still in Homburgt? He was when Sherman made his raid into South Carolina.I have not heard from any of them since.I am very anxious to hear from Dear Cousin Laura.Poor afflicted creature.I do not know what will become of her.Mr. Wray (her adopted Father) has been dead nearly a year.He was very much in debt at the time of his death. He died very suddenly - did not make a will, and of course she did not get any of his property if he left any, which I don't think he did." I would think Laura was well into adulthood by 1865 and her father was still alive, so I don't know why she was living with an adopted father.Since I don't have a death date for Laura's mother, perhaps she died young and Winson felt he could not raise Laura. She may have been taken to SC by the Williams family, or even someone else. It has been hard for other researchers to get information on Winson and his family.Maybe you will have better luck. This letter does sound as though Laura was ill in 1865.Maybe you can find her in Census after the date she was with the Williams.
