GEORGE EGGLESTON 1834-1915
George Eggleston’s father is Elisha Egleston (Eggleston), b. abt. 1805 NY, d. Unknown. George’s Civil War papers list father as Elijah, Elisal or maybe Elisha (difficult to read), mother’s name is unknown, birthplace of both parents are stated as unknown. He states, he was born September 2nd 1834, in Oswego Co., NY. His occupation when entering the war was cooper. George moved to Michigan in 1852. George’s obituary states he was born in the town of Oswego, NY and that his parent’s died when he was young. George married Mary Elizabeth Osterhout, in Michigan on Jan. 1st, 1858. Obit lists surviving sister Juliett Schug in Billings, MT. One of the witnesses at Juliett’s marriage to William Schug is Alfred E. Eggleston. William and Juliett were married March 18th 1869. She states she was born in Cayuga Co. (5 Nov 1846), NY & her residence is Butler, Branch Co., MI. Alfred E. was also living in Butler at that time. Alfred E. Eggleston's death certificate states his father was Elisha Eggleston & his mother was ‘Betsey’ Eggleston.Date of Alfred’s death is 22 Oct 1888, age is 56 yrs., 1 mo., 5 days (b. 1832). Juliett (Eggleston) Schug died in Cosmopolis, Grays Harbor, WA, 10 Nov. 1926. Her death certificate lists her parents as ? and ?, same entry for parents place of birth, ae:80 y, 0 m, 5 d.
1840 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Elisha Eggleston, two males under 5 (possible Abram b. +/- 1839 & John b. +/- 1837); two males 5 thru 9 (possible Alfred b. 1832 & George b. 1834); two males 30 thru 39; one male 40 thru 49; one female 10 thru 14 (b. 1826-1830, name unknown), and one female 20 thru 29 (possible Elizabeth / Betsey). Note: 1840 Census Elisha had 1 son George’s age, who may have had 3 brothers and 1 older sister (name unknown). Alfred was born in 1832, George in 1834. Younger brothers may be John, b. about 1837 & Abram or Abraham who was bornabt. 1839. Edward (more later) was born in 1842 & Juliett in 1847 and Eva in 1849, so not in this census.
1845 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Elisha Egleston shows (only): 6 males & 2 females. The six males could be: Elisha (father), Alfred, George, John, Abram & Edward. The two females could be Elizabeth “Betsey” (wife & mother) and either the unknown female in the 1840 census, between 15 and 19 years, or Laura Elizabeth, born about 1845 (see below).
1849 School Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY,. Name of parent: Elisha Eggleston. Name and age of children: Alfred 15, George 14, John 12, Abram 10, Edward 8.
Voters Poll List, Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Elisha Eggleston voted in 1840, 41, 42, 44, 46, 47, 48, 49 &1850. Abram voted in 1859, 60, 61, 62 & 1863.
1850 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Elisha Egleston age 45, is living with the Charles McIntyre family. Elisha’s occupation is listed as cooper. Also in Sterling is: Abram Eggleston age 11, living with the Elias Cole family. Abram died in the Civil War on 8/15/1864, and is buried in Brooklyn, NY. (not found in the 1860 census, he was drafted & enlisted @ Auburn, NY)
1850 Census: Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY. Edward Eggleston age 9, and ‘Julia’ Eggleston age 3, are living with Samuel Clark family in Hannibal, Oswego Co., NY (on Andrews Rd. at the Cayuga county line) 2 miles away from Elisha & McIntyre’s.
Note: Whereabouts of Alfred, George, and John in the 1850 census are uncertain at this time.
1850 Mortality Census: Sterling, Cayuga, NY. Elizabeth Egleston age 38, female, married, died Sept. 1849, cause was Dysentery, # days ill was 3 weeks. Note: “Deaths in Sterling, Cayuga Co. NY 1848” (from “various sources”) Feb 12, 1848 Laura Elizabeth Egleston 3 yrs old.
1855 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Edward Eggleston age 14, born Cayuga County, living with the Jacob Chrysler Family. Next to Jacob Chrysler is John Eggleston age 19, born Cayuga County, living with the Chas. Salisbury family.
1860 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. Edward Egelston age 19 living with the Jacob Chrysler family. Note: Charles McIntyre family that Elisha was living with ten years earlier is also on the same page. Ten pages later in the census for Sterling is; John Egelston age 22 living with the Wm. Stevens family. Note: J. Chrysler & Wm. Stevens places are about 1.5 miles apart (1859 Cayuga Co. map). Elisha is not found in the 1860 census.
1860 Census: Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI. George Eggleston age 26; Mary (nee: Osterhout) age 23; Edmund age 1; Catherine Hager age 16; and William Osterhout age 13. Note: next to George in the 1860 census is: Alfred Eggleston age 27; Sarah age 22; and Martha age 11 mos.
10 Dec 1864: “To the surrogate of the County of Cayuga: The Petition of Eva Eggleston (see 1865 census below) a minor of the town of Sterling in the County of Cayuga, Respectfully Seweth: That your petitioner is the daughter of Elisha Eggleston late of the town of Sterling in the County of Cayuga, N.Y. now deceased, and was aged fifteen years on the 6th of September last past: That your petitioner has no testamentary Guardian and is now a resident of said town of Sterling in said County of Cayuga. That she is entitled to the following property, to wit:
As heir to Abram Eggleston her Brother who was a private in C.D. 97the Regt. N.Y. Volunteers now deceased she is entitled to his back pay amounting to about $100. And his Bounty amounting to about $75 making a total of about $175.
That it is necessary that a guardian should be appointed for your petitioner until she shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years; and she hereby nominates William Oliver of the town of Sterling for her Guardian, and prays that the said William Oliver may be appointed accordingly.
10 December 1864: ”Know all Men by these Presents, That We, William Oliver, Stephen Oliver and Andrew Oliver, All of the town of Sterling, County of Cayuga and State of New York are held and firmly bound unto Eva Eggleston a minor, in the sum of Three Hundred and Fifty Dollars, lawful money of the State of New York, to be paid to the said Eva Eggleston or her certain attorney, executors, administrators or assigns, and to which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally by these presents.
The Condition of this Obligation is such, That if the above bounden William Oliver shall faithfully in all things discharge the duty of a Guardian to the said Eva Eggleston a minor, according to law, and shall render a true and just account of all monies and property received by him and of the application thereof, and of his Guardianship in all respects to any Court having cognizance thereof, when thereunto required, then this obligation to be void; otherwise to be and remain in full force.

1865 Census: Sterling, Cayuga Co., NY. (dated 30 Jun 1865)William Oliver age 47, wife Jane S. Oliver age 44, daughter Annie L. Oliver age 9, Eva Eggleston age 14, born Cayuga Co., NY & Julia Eggleston age 19, born Cayuga Co., NY.
1870 Census: Flowerfield, St. Joseph Co., MI. George Eggleston age 36; Mary age 33; Edmund age 11; Juliette age 9; John C. age 5, Jennie A age 3; and William (1st GGF) age 11 mos. Next door to George this census is; William Schug age 34; Juliett (nee: Eggleston) age 20. Were William Schug & Juliett living at the same place that Alfred was living in in 1860, right next to George, maybe? Three pages after George and Juliett, still in Flowerfield, is; a John Eggleston age 35 (?).
1870 Census: Butler, Branch Co., MI. Alfred Eggleston age 35; Sarah age 32; Martha age 10; and Edward Eggleston age 28.
Note: Edward Eggleston married Phoebe E. Stone on 28 Dec 1875 in La Crosse, La Crosse Co., WI. Edward states on the marriage license that his father’s name is Elisha E. Eggleston and his mother’s name is Betsy Eggleston.
