My name is Rachel (Eiseman) Benedict. My mother's name is Margot Eiseman; her father's name was Alfred Eiseman. His parents were named Sam and Aline Eiseman, and his sister was Anne Eiseman--sorry I can't trace the Eisemans back any further than that. It is possible of course that the name was spelled differently at one time, but this is the way it was spelled on my great-grandparents' wedding certificate in 1916.
My grandpa Alfred's ancestors immigrated from Stuttgart (sp?) Germany to NYC in about the 1850's. They worked in the garment district. They were definitely Jews, though culturally pretty different from other Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants--they didn't speak Yiddish and looked down on those who did. I think some of the relatives may have converted to Christianity in the early part of the 20th century in order to avoid anti-semitism and/or to assimilate into American society.Ya'all w/the last name of Eiseman--this may be the case for you too. :)
