Bonjour ! I suppose you don't speak french,so I'll try to explain Oberfranken in english. Oberfranken ,just like Mittelfranken ,is part of the former Franken dukedom (840 to 1814). The name comes from the king of the Franks , Clovis ,who took over this area in the 6th century ,before invading Gaul ,which was then called France.Franken ,or Franconie in french, was brought under the jurisdiction of Bavaria in 1814 after the Congress of Vienna. Oberfranken is the highest and eastern part of Franken, arund the city of BAYREUTH.(The capital of Mittelfranken is Nuremberg) I made a first trip to this area in 1993,researching my ancestors. That's how I found the little city of ARZBERG ,almost at the Czech border.I did not find the link to my family, but the probability is very high they should come from this area ,which suffered a lot of emigration during and after the Thirty Years War (1618-1648). In the 19th century, about 10% of the Arzberg population emigrated to South-Bend ,between 1838 and 1868,according to a book I could look at:the Arzberger Heimatbuch (1954),which is a local history book.
