My line originates from Thomas Elligood/Alligood of Northampton County, Virginia. Have my line confirmed back to him, but further back is unconfirmed.Have not found him on a passenger list arriving in the "New World". So where is he from and when did he arrive?Could he have been born in "The Colonies"?Have unconfirmed information that he may have been the son of a frenchman named LeGardo, who arrived aboard the "Abigail" at James City, Virginia, in 1621. The name Elligood, Ellegood, Alligood, Allegood, etal came from the English spelling of a french name phonically. LeGardo was hired by an English Company to start a wine industry in the "New World" to compete with France. The business venture failed and he was left to his own resources in the "New World".Probably could not read nor write and speaking with a french accent (obviously) :)the English recorded the name as they heard it.Thus Elgood, Ellgood, Elligood, Allegood, etal.Just a theory but based on what I have seen happen in other simiular situations. Until I find Thomas on a passenger list having arrived from wherever I will personally stay with the LeGardo theory.
