I am atempting to build a database of Ellinghams and wondered if you had done this already. I am currently using Excel to collate the information but I intend to convert to Access or Oracle at some point. Excuse my ignorance but could you describe the format of the Gedcom files you have. To load into Excel / Access I need the data to be in flat file format i.e. One line containing data in the same format for each person and / or event. Records should be either even spaced or character separated. I acheived my initial data by accessing all Ellinghams (and Allinghams) records on the Familysearch site. The output (circa 3400 records) had to be manipulated a little to achieve a consistent format. This first required getting records onto a single line (the output covers 2 - 3 lines). These records were then massaged into a consistent tabular format by aligning name / date and plpace information. Using the spreadsheet derived from this I can sort by name / place / date or any other element. What I have found though is that the records are incomplete (even for fairly recent material). Also they do not contain firm links between individuals. One can simply find that Daniel Ellingham (Christened 1783 - Luton) father was John - the question is which one? Anyway, I would be very grateful if you can provide a more complete set of data - or offer any other advice. If anybody would like copies of what I have so far then just let me know. The spreadsheet is 887Kb at present so Email could take a while!
