Lieutenant Jesse Ellis was born Feb 14 , 1826 and died Sept. 19, 1863 in battle during the Civil War.He was the first casualty of the war from Batavia.
He was the son of Jesse Ellis b. 1774, NC. and Nancy Medaras b. 1788 NC. On Aug. 29, 1850 he married Sarah C. Kain in Clermont Co., OH. He was a Cabinet Maker by trade before he joined the 53rd Reg. O.V.I. ( Ohio Volunteer Infantry) and went off to War. Jesse was killed at the battle of Chickamauga in Georgia on Sept.19, 1863. He was 37 years and 7 months of age. His body was found on the battlefield and brought home for burial.It was a military funeral. Soldiers from Camp Dennison marched in the funeral procession. A band played a funeral march with muffled drums. His body was interred with Military and Odd Fellows honors on April 1, 1864.
Jesse and Sarah had issue of four children but only one reached adulthood. She was Mary E. Ellis b. July 27 1856. The other three are buried near their parents. They were Thomas, Julian and Little May.
Their daughter, Mary E. Ellis married Charles A. Robinson on Dec. 31,1878 in Clermont Co., OH.
(Two of his Medaris Nephews were in this battle at Chickamauga but fighting for the Confederacy.)
