Isaac Ellis, born 29 Oct 1752 in Frederick County, Maryland, son of Ellis Ellis & Ann Bateman, never had the middle name Newton or initial N. He used neither middle name nor initial in either his pension application or will, nor have we seen any other evidence (land, marriage, etc). The "Newton" first appeared in an early application for D.A.R. membership. This confusion has continued for generations. A possible explanation is that his son, John J. Ellis (1802-1838), did have a son named Isaac Newton Ellis, b 1823. Newton may have been a family name.
