I'm back to an Isaac Elmer born 1721 who married Elizabeth Garnham in about 1744. They had a daughter Ann Elmer b1758 who at 25 had a son Thomas Elmer b1783 illegitamitly to a Robert Runnicus.
Robert was very straight up for his day as he signed an agreement with the local vicar to support the boy. When he died he left half his estate to this son (even though by then he had married and had other children). Ann also later married and had other children.
Thomas married a Lucy Dixon and they had Henry William Elmer b1831 who married Mary Rice.
They had Henry Arthur Elmer b1861 who married Lucy Wakelin. (The eldest son was Edgar Dixon Elmer, perpetuating the grandmother's maiden name as was the custom).
They had Sidney John Elmer b1899, the middle 1 of their 3 sons. As before, the eldest son was Edgar William Dixon Elmer, perpetuating the gt-grandmother's maiden name in this case, as apparently Edgar Dixon had died young). The youngest was Leslie Arthur Elmer after whom I was named.
Sid was my Grandfather, and sailed to Australia about 1913 and married Emily Ellinor Hardwick in 1916. They had Arthur Wakelin Elmer b1918, my Dad, the eldest (only) son so again perpetuating the grandmother's maiden name as previously).
Dad married my Mum Eleanor Greta Rebetzke and they had me, Leslie Arthur Elmer b1952. I married Andrea Jean Carr in 1988 and we have 3 daughters.
Sadly the origins of the Elmer name are merely stories I've been told by other Elmer genealogists, and within the wider family in the UK.
