I have just started researching my family on my father's side who was Edward Potts, Born Lamesley, Nr. Gateshead, Co. Durham. England. I found my Granfather's (William Potts )grave in Lamesley parish church and found that my uncle Thomas Potts had put a memorial on theheadstone for my grandmother Eliza Potts ( nee Dixon) I was surprised to find that Grandmother Eliza was Uncle Tom's stepmother.I can assume that Uncle Tom Potts was dad's stepbrother.
I then went to Newcastle upon Tyne library and found that two people who I thought were my father's sisters were his stepsisters?
Their names were Jane Ann Eltringham Born 1883, and Rebecca Eltringham born 1890. Father Joseph Eltringham. I also found a Whitfield Eltringham who was witness to the marriage.
Jane Ann Married a Mr. Henry Littledyke and they lived in Welwyn Garden City, down south of England. They married on 30/9/1905 at Lamesley Parish Church, Nr. Gateshead she was age 21.
Rebecca Married Ambrose Hopper King at Lamesley Parish Church, Nr. Gateshead in Nov. 1910 she was age 20.She lived at Durham Road, Low Fell, Gateshead on Tyne.I am not quite sure whether she lived there after ambrose died.Rebecca was supposed to have reached the age of 100.
I do remember when I was small that I was taken to a funeral at Low Fell and I was left with an old lady who was the deceased's wife (she could not bear to go to the funeral as I can rember).Maybe this lady was of the Eltringham Family.
I am now quite confused as to who the Eltringham side of the family is.
Did my Grandfather William Potts marry twice.
First marriage to widow Eltringham and second marriage to Eliza Dixon.
This I will find out eventually.
I hope you will find this of interest though it may not be the same family.
