Finding my husband's great-grandfather has became a quest. The family story goes that his parents died when he was young (he was born May 1855), and he was sent to an uncle who was quite cruel to him (to the point where the older members of the family who knew the story would cry or get angry at it's mention--and never passed it along). So, he ran away from "somewhere" in New York, worked his way south on the Erie Canal, ended up in Reading PA where he made friends with Robert SHAULIS and together they came to the Defiance Ohio area. He married Sarah Olivia Ball and lived out his life in the NW corner of Ohio.Well, the only possiblility that has shown up so far is a Charles Elwood age 5 and an S. Elwood age 23 (?) living in Yates Co. Ny. in the home of Lewis Gabriel and family. It is easy to assume that S. is the daughter and she came back home after some tragic loss, but there is nothing to back that up. The family has always used to L's in their name, but there was talk when Rick's grandfather was young that it originally had just one. Does any of this story ring a bell???? I am about to go over the edge on this--I have worked on it for 3 years.
