No, there's no will on file for him.The only thing in his file at the NC state archives is a paper on the administration of his estate. Some of the items are illegible. The spelling is as shown on the paper.I have noted the ones of interest (which mention John Embler and Jacob Varner).
"Administration of the estate of William Emler was granted Nov 1806 to Mary Emler, who gave 400 pounds with Lewis Tyre as security."
Return of the estate of Wm. Emler, deceased, 1813, signed by E. Morgan and W ? Bodenhamer as the subscribing justices of the county.Stated that the amount of sails and debts due estate were 425.19.5, vouchers amounted to 100.6.4, and balance in the hands of the administratrix was 325.13.1 and that the administratix was in arrears to the estate in that sum (325.13.1).Credit by the vouchers include: "No. 7, to two notes, one against Mathew Byrn and another against Christopher Hopler (sp) proven to be the property of John Embler, Lb. 1.14.2"; No 8, proven acompt by Jacob Varner, Lb. 22.10.0."
I found a World Tree Posting on ancestry.com last night that shows that Peter Wortman and Mary Imbler had the following children (all born in Rowan, NC):
Philip, b.c. 1790
Mary Elizabeth, b 1 Nov 1792
John, b 2 Apr 1795
Susan F, b.c. 1799
George, b.c. 1800
This leads me to believe that Mary Imbler was indeed the daughter of William Emler, probably by his first (unknown) wife.I have placed her in my database with a birthdate circa 1772.This seems the only possible scenario, since Philip, John, George & Susan Wortman all are listed as heirs of William Emler.
I think Mary's father, William, later married a woman named Mary who was previously married to a Varner. My thoughts are that she had Andrew, Joseph, Frances and Molly Varner. She then married William Emler (circa 1788?) and had Catherine/Caty circa 1789.Mary appears on the 1810 Rowan NC census with one male <10, 1 female 16-26, 1 female over 45.She's living next door to John Imler, who I believe is her stepson.I can't identify the young male, but believe the younger female to be Caty.
I located a deed in 1783 which mentions the land bordering the "widow Varner".This could possibly be Mary who married William Emler thereafter. The only Varners I located on the 1790 NC census are both in Randolph County:John and Jacob.John had FWM: 1 16+, 3 <16; FWF:3.Jacob had FWM: 1 16+, 2 <16; FWF:1.They're on page 309.
William Emler is shown on the 1800 Rowan NC census (page 352): FWM:1 <10, 1 16-26, 1 45+.FWF: 1 10-16, 1 45+.Two doors away from John Emler (his son). The boys would likely be Andrew & Joseph Varner. The young female would be Caty.
Any comments to assist in proving/disproving my theories are most welcome!
