Hello.
I was surfing the net at random a few days ago and I came accross your entry about an Empson newsletter.I posted a request for it, but have had no reply from you as yet.
I am curious about the fact that we share a name, since I too am called Richard Empson. But unlike you I am a born and bred Uruguayan.
My grandfather, Christopher Empson (a.k.a. Dick, though who knows why, since his middle name was not Richard), was a yorkshireman. He was descended from the Empsons of Ghoole (the Yokefleet bunch).Born in 1900, he lived on a farm in Yorkshire with his father (William Cyril Empson), mother (an Eliot) and two sisters (there was a third, but she died as a child before my grandfather was born) until he joined the Royal Navy aged 16 to fight in WW1.When the war was over he moved to Uruguay, which he knew from his father's stories (he too had lived there years earlier). There he met and married my grandmother and my father, Bruce (an only son), was born.My grandfather died in 1987.
Born in Mercedes in 1932, my father has lived all his live in Uruguay. He moved to the capital, Montevideo to go to university and there he met my mom. They were marrieed for 15 years and that union produced first me (in 1964) and then my sister Caroline (in 1970).They divorced in 1976 and my father has since remarried, but had no more children.
My sister married a Dominican and they now live near Fort Lauderdale in Florida, USA.They have no children.
I married a lass from Lancashire and we have one son, Andrew (born in Muscat, Oman in 1996).
Charles Empson, the author (who lives near Kent) is a third cousin of mine and we met when I came to the UK to get merried. The only other Empson relative with whom I have contact is Judith Empson (who lives in Birmingham).
Since my grandfather was the only male child, I know we aqre the only Empsons left from William Empson's line.I do think, though that he had brothers, one of which was called Cornelius and emigrated to North America.Christopher was very into all this family tree business, and wrote extensive notes on the subject.Somehow I inherited these notes when he passed away and they are sitting in one of my cuboards back in Montevideo.I never had time to read through them at length, but know there is a fair amount of research contained therein.
I have been living abroad for a number of years and have recently finished a posting in Rome, where I worked for the British Foreign & Commonweath Office. We are now returning to Montevideo aiming to settle down there, though you never know where we might end up.Andrew is 5 and has lived in 3 countries already!
Anyway, let me know if there is anything else I can add.
When I get back to Montevideo, I will look up my grandad's notes.
All the best to you and all Empsons worldwide.
Rick
