I see you are asking for information about an Emslie family.Although I don’t think I’m related to this particular family, I do have some information about them.
George Emslie, born Jan 1836, Scotland, married on the 30th May 1864 at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Mary Milne born Oct 1835, Scotland.
They had as family: William, born 29 April 1866 at Banchory Devenick, Kincardine, Scotland; Agnes, born 11 Feb 1868 (probably Banchory Devenick also); David Finlay Arthur, born 18 February 1870, at Banchory Devenick, Kincardine, Scotland; Anna, about 1872, Iowa, USA; Jane about 1875, Polk, Iowa, USA; Mary, August 1877, Polk, Iowa, USA; Orphe, about 1879 Iowa, USA; Orpha, October 1881, Polk, Iowa, USA. (Most of this information comes from the 1880 US Census. In this census the surname was listed as EMSLEY and there is no middle name given for William and David is listed as David A only. George, the father, was listed as a stone mason and their census district was 5th Ward, Des Moines, Polk, Iowa ). Orphe is listed as being 8 months old at the time of the census. Orpha, born 1881 would not have been included in the census but since the names are so similar I think that perhaps Orphe may have died before 1881. I don’t think it was unusual to give the same name of an earlier brother or sister who had died. There is the possibility that there was a son George, born 8 May 1865, but he may have died or left home before the census of 1880.
From the birthdates it looks like the family left Scotland some time after February 1870. I hope this can be of some help to you and the lady you are helping.
