After years of queries I finally found my grandmother's 1st marriage certificate and license which identified my grandfather, birth place and his parents! Guess if you wait long enough, the information finally makes it to the web.
The license was dated 19 December 1900 in Poplar Valley Co., Montana and the marriage certificate was dated 25 December, 1900.
According to the license: My grandfather, John Henry Erbes, age 33, was born in Wapello, Iowa to Mary Strochman and George Erbes.
My grandmother, Esther Hanna Mountford, age 38, was born in Moundville, Wisconsin to Catherine Wilkes Mountford and George Mountford.
I didn't have the opportunity to ever meet this grandfather but I do know that he was a musician. His occupation was "piano salesman". I have photos of him living in Hawaii and in 1921 working for his brother, Edward, owner of Erbes Brothers Music Company of Fresno, California.
My grandmother and he divorced c.1903. I have yet to verify a listing in the 1930 Census of a John H. Erbes of Barnstable, Massachusetts and wife, Marguerite 20 years his junior. Seems he is a Piano salesman, but 10 years younger!
Does anyone have information on John Henry Erbes which might be helpful? Seems he was 5 years younger than my grandmother, but 20 years older than his 2nd wife.
