St John Greer Ervine (1883-1971) was an author and playwright who was born in East Belfast. He left school in 1898 and worked as an insurance clerk in Belfast. He then moved to London in 1901 where he again worked as an insurance clerk. In 1911 he met W. B. Yeats in London. He became the manager of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1915. He joined the Dublin Fusiliers and lost a leg when he was wounded at Flanders. His grandmother (Mrs Greer) owned a shop in Belfast. His play "Boyd's Shop" written in 1936 was based on characters met in her shop.
