gleaned from "A Survey & Index of Rev War Courts Martial"; James C. Neagles: Chapter 6: Summer Soldiers:
Essex, James, Batteauman, disobedience to orders; twenty lashes (111)
A batteau was a boat; thus a batteauan was a river boat man The boats were shallow draft boats (on the order of those boats used by the French Fur traders) that could carry up to 1600 pounds of Tobacco on the rivers in Va. (re: batteauman search on yahoo.com). Even showed a batteau boat with the men in it.
Do not know IF this is the same James Essex who is also found in Augusta Co, Va on as a wit on a marriage record.
Very little found on James Essex
