St. Charles (Kane County, Illinois) Chronicle, Feb. 18, 1970, Obituaries, Mass Held Thursday for Ray W. Essig, Hardware Merchant. Funeral Mass was offered for Ray W. Essig, 1126 S. Sixth Street, on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Heraty the celebrant. Burial was in the Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva. Funeral arrangements were made by Yurs Funeral Home.
Mr. Essig died on Tuesday at Cook County Burn Center in Chicago, where he had been a patient after suffering severe burn on Jan. 30. He was born Oct. 25, 1911, in Bellwood, Illinois, and had lived in St. Charles for 42 years. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and had been active in the St. Charles Chamber and business affairs in the community for many years.
At the time of his retirement in 1965, Mr. Essig owned and operated the Essig Hardware Store in downtown St. Charles.
Surviving are his wife, Lurene; a son, Ray Jr., at home; two daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Barbara) Stage and Mrs. John (Cindy) Haab, both of Aurora; two brothers, Wilfred of St. Charles and George of Lansing, Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Galdys Barnes of Geneva and Mrs. James (Shirley) Winston of Rockford; and one granddaughter.
