Rhoda Esterbrook and William Umstead
Hello All,
I have been looking for the family of my great-grandfather John George Esterbrook for some time with little or no success. Based on his Missouri death certificate he was born in Waukegan, Lake County, Illinois on 8 Aug 1849 to a John Esterbrook and a Rhoda Mann both born in Canada. I have never been able to find John or Rhoda in any U.S. or Canadian census. The first time I find John George, the son, is in the 1870 Fountain County, Indiana census where he was living with the family of his future father-in-law as a farm labor, but with no sign of his parents.
However, recently I have come across some new information in the form of a marriage record, also in Fountain County, Indiana on 4 Sep 1855, between a William Umstead and a Rhoda Esterbrook. Could this Rhoda Esterbrook be the mother of my John George? Perhaps her first husband, John Esterbrook, died sometime between 8 Aug 1849 and 4 Sep 1855 and she married for a second time William Umstead. Although this has not been substantiated, based on the 1850 Fountain County, Indiana census, this William Umstead could be the son of John Umstead and his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown).
Does anyone have any information on this couple (William and Rhoda) or know where they might have gone? I have not been able to find them in any subsequent censuses. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Frank
