The Plattsburgh Sentinel, January 16 1891 p.8
Died in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 11, 1891, at the home of her son, Elihu B. Estes, Esther Estes widow of Benj. H. Estes, nearly 95 years of age.
Benj. H. Estes moved with his family from Vermont to Port Kent, N.Y., in 1829. He was one of the Vermont militia who volunteered and crossed Lake Champlain in small boats in time to participate in the closing of the Battle of Plattsburgh, in 1812. The British fleet had surrendered and the British land forces were in full retreat for Canada three or four hours after the volunteers arrived on the New York side of the lake. Mrs. Estes had spent the most part of the last ten and one-half years at the home of her son Elihu B. Estes.
